Maryland School for the Blind – Autism/Blind Learning Activity Center and Cottages Owner: Maryland School for the Blind The Autism-blind program is designed to meet the highly unique and complex needs of students, ages 6-21, who have two profound concomitant disabilities—autism and blindness. Having either of these two disabilities alone has major ramifications and presents serious consequences on the individual child’s day to day functioning, achievement, and overall development. Having both autism and blindness is profoundly disabling. When both disabilities are present, each condition is intensified, resulting in a severity of impact greater than that of either disability alone. Due to the specific needs of the Autism-blind population, it was imperative to construct new learning and living facilities with a highly controlled sensory environment that considers environmental stimuli and the impact it has on their sensitive and compromised neurological systems. |
