The BCDC Youth Detention Center (YDC), housing 60 detainees, is the first phase of a broad master plan for the State of Maryland’s Correctional Complex in Baltimore City (CCBC). The BYDC will be dedicated to providing housing and services for pretrial youths who are charged as adults. The 60,342 SF project includes the renovation of an existing two-story building as well as a one-story addition. The facility will provide male and female residential areas, health services and educational facilities.

Lorax provided LEED Consulting services for the contractor for the BYDC project. An energy efficient VRF system generated an energy cost savings of 24 % annually, and the installation of low-flow fixtures throughout the facility generated an overall annual water-use savings of 31%. An optimal indoor environmental quality was achievable with the use of low-emitting materials. Other sustainable design criteria include the use of recycled and regional materials, LED lighting, and a green housekeeping policy.
