- In the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, over 30% of the materials used were extracted and manufactured within 500 miles of the building. Some examples of building materials extracted and manufactured regionally are Rebar; Concrete and Carpeting.
- The Horseshoe Casino Baltimore has used Low-VOC products throughout the construction of the building including flooring, adhesives, wall paints and caulks.
- The Horseshoe Casino Baltimore has reduced the building water usage by 45% by installing low flow plumbing fixtures. These fixtures include dual flush toilets which save on water use and reduce sewage treatment needs. The reduced water and sewage volumes provide a long-term cost savings for the building as well as reduced energy.
Exterior water use is reduced by not providing a permanent irrigation system and by using native plants that require minimal care for landscaping.
- The Horseshoe Casino Baltimore has highly reflective roofing material on over 100% of the roof area. The TPO white roof reflects 98% of the sun.
- The building materials at the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore contain over 20% of both post-consumer and pre-consumer recycled content. Some of these materials include the structural steel, concrete, carpeting and doors.
- The central air handling units contain energy recovery and dehumidification wheels to minimize energy use. The central cooling plant includes a heat exchanger to provide free chilled water from the cooling towers in the winter. The central heating plant includes 98% efficient condensing boilers to provide heat to the building. The building uses a combined heat and power generator to supply electricity to the Casino. This helps reduce power requirements from Baltimore Gas and Electric. The heat discharged from the generator is used to heat the Casino in the winter. When heating is not needed, the discharged heat is used create domestic hot water to serve the Restrooms and Restaurants.
