Savannah East is the first LEED certified building in Trinidad. The building superstructure consists of concrete foundations, concrete columns and concrete beams. The envelope of the building consists of fiber reinforced concrete panels (FRC) which are locally manufactured, and which most of the materials used for manufacturing are locally available. To reduce heat gain to the building, the envelope was insulated and double glazed windows were selected. The roof is insulated with poly-isocyanurate boards, which is not a normal practice in Trinidad. The HVAC system consists of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, and LED light fixtures were used throughout the building. In an attempt to further attain energy saving, a 20 KW Photovoltaic system is on the roof of the building and the only one in Trinidad of such a significant capacity. The power generated is inverted and transferred to the building grid during the day. Rainwater is harvested and stored on site for toilet flushing. An education program has been created describing the green features of the project to promote an understanding of green building and cultivate demand for sustainable construction.
